Finnish Yule Glögg (Mulled Wine)

Growing up in Finland glögg (mulled wine) is an integral part of the holidays, consumed in pretty much every home throughout Scandinavia. Its unique, spicey flavors fill up the whole house with comfort and warmth. As we descend into the darkest days of the year, little things to brighten up the day like delicious hot drinks and warming spices can make the world of a difference. Serving this to your holiday guests is a guaranteed win.

GLÖGG INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 bottle of red wine

  • 1L unsweetened cranberry juice

  • 1L apple juice

  • 1/2 cup maple syrup

  • 5 cinnamon sticks

  • 5 star anise

  • 2 tbsp whole cloves

  • 1 tbsp cardamom seeds

  • 1/4 cup small chaga chunks

  • 4-5 inch piece of fresh ginger, sliced

  • 5 clementins/mandarins, sliced with peel on

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Add all the ingredients into a crockpot (or heavy base soup pot) and let simmer on low heat for 1h.

  2. Strain out all the spices and citrus.

  3. pour into clean glass bottles.

  4. Store in the fridge for up to a month, heat up and serve hot as needed.
