natural vs "natural" bathbombs
Not all bathbombs are made equally. Although they might seem like fun and innocent little additions to spark up your bathing experience, many comercially sold bath bombs contain toxic chemicals that absorb straight into our skin as our pores open up in the hot bath water or by inhaling them through the bath steam. Children in particular are extra sensitive to these chemicals, which can cause dermatitis, allergic reactions, eye damage, and respiratory problems among other things. With a popular product comes great responsibility. And your responsibility is to make sure you’re not soaking in a tub full of toxic chemicals. Below i have listed the 3 most commonly used ingredients that are added to bath bombs, even ones that are advertized as 100% natural.
fragrance
synthetic fragrances are one of the most toxic ingredients in bath and beauty products. As stated in the National Academy of Sciences: About 95% of chemicals used in synthetic fragrances are derived from petroleum, and are known or suspected endocrine disruptors. Fragrance mixtures have been linked to cancer, neurotoxicity, allergens, respiratory irritants and environmental toxicants, with acethaldehyde being the most common frangrance compound.

polysobate 80
Polysorbate 80 is derived from sorbitol, a natural ingredient. However, polysorbate 80 is not a natural ingredient. In fact, it is a carcinogen due to the fact that it is treated with 80 parts of ethylene oxide. Ethylene Oxide scores 10 on a scale of 1-to-10 of hazardous chemicals. It’s carcinogenic, shown to induce tumours in mammary glands. It’s also linked with developmental and reproductive toxicity, immunotoxicity and allergies.

Artificial Dyes
Synthetic colors like D&C Red 33, a dye derived from coal tar or petroleum, which are known human carcinogens. Many studies show a link between these synthetic colors and the development of adhd, neuron damage, and adrenal and kidney damage.
Look for this alternative: Botanicals, clays, micas
Polysorbate 80 is even used in products advertized as 100% natural, and many claim that bathbombs can’t be made without it due to its great emulsifying properties to blend oils and colorants with the water. It can also act as a surfactant in soaps and cosmetics, as well as a solubilizer and to make products look creamier and more attractive. The dark side of Poly80 is that it’s slightly flammable in presence of heat (think hot water and candles folks), hazardous in case of skin contact (irritant), of eye contact (irritant), and of ingestion and inhalation, causes adverse reproductive effects based on animal test data, carcinogenic based on animal tests, and is mutagenic (aka it affects genetic material).
However, bathbombs CAN be made completely without any of these toxins, and i can prove it to you! I have done an immense amount of research and testing and experimenting in the past 2 months to create a 100% natural, vegan, botanical, therapeutic bathbomb for all you clean beauty fans out there, and i can proudly say that i have succeeded. Made with therapeutic grade essential oils, real botanicals and plant materials, clays, salts, biodegradable glitters, a natural emulsifyer called Red turkey castor oil, high quality carrier oils, and non-GMO corn starch. They fizz, they color the water, they create foam, they smell DEVINE, and they are completely 100% toxic-free!
